What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact forms

Our contact form specifically asks for a users consent which allows Traveling For Miles to store the information submitted on the form.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics

Traveling For Miles uses Google Analytics to track traffic to and from the site but we have also installed software which:

  • Anonymizes IP addresses
  • Disables the Demographics and Interests Reports for Remarketing and Advertising
  • Disables UserID and author name tracking

All these are in compliance with the latest EU GDPR legislation.

Who we share your data with

Email Newsletters

Traveling For Miles uses a company called MailChimp to manage our list of email subscribers and to automatically send out our email newsletters (on days when new articles are posted).

Any data collected is held by MailChimp and not by Traveling For Miles.  By signing up to our email list you consent to Traveling For Miles passing your data to MailChimp.

Your email address is only used for sending our newsletters. We do not rent or sell our list to third parties and we do not send out advertising material on behalf of third parties.

MailChimp tracks how many of our emails you open and whether you click on any links.  We only use this data to identify and delete accounts which are no longer active.

MailChimp also tracks what device you use to read your emails in order to use the most suitable mailing format.

You may unsubscribe at any point by using the link included in all of our emails.  Emails will cease immediately.

If you would like a copy of your data held by Mailchimp please contact us using our contact form from the email address you used to sign up to our email updates and we will send you a screenshot of your MailChimp profile.

Advertising

Google Adsense is the only 3rd party supplier of advertising on Traveling For Miles. You can control the type of targeted advertising you are shown by visiting this Google page.

Traveling For Miles has a number of affiliate partners (more details here). These affiliates will place a cookie on your device when you click through to a third-party website from Traveling For Miles.

Unless you receive a pop-up notice to the contrary, this is done under a ‘legitimate interest’ defence because it is required to track referrals to advertiser websites.  ‘Legitimate interest’ is acceptable because the data is not used to build behavioural user profiles, behaviourally profile or market for any other purposes.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we have the option to recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

What rights you have over your data

If you have left comments on this site you can request to have these comments deleted.

If you have signed up for our email list you can request to see the data held by our email distribution list manager (Mailchimp) and you can unsubscribe from all mailings by using the link supplied at the bottom of our emails.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service (Akismet)

Our email distribution list manager (Mailchimp) holds all data supplied through our email subscription forms.
